IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR AUSTRIAN BREEDERS:

VERIFICATION OF MICROCHIP NUMBERS FOR REGISTRATIONS

Herein is information for all breeders in Austria to keep in mind when it comes to the numbers on microchips used when registering horses.

When it comes to identifying horses, the current EU Regulation 2021/963 (https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/DE/TXT/?uri=CELEX:32021R0963&qid=1688549194219) stipulates that the microchips used to identify animals must comply with ISO 3166 standards. In other words, the initial identifier of the microchip codes provides information about the country (country code).   All chips that comply with ISO 3166 standards have an initial identification code that is less than 900 and begins with 040 for equines identified in Austria.

This restriction is applied to ALL animals, independently of the animal’s date of birth (DoB).
